Good stuff more or less, the book, that is. I guess those old brain cells of yours haven't begun to "Bidenize" themselves yet? No offense, as I'm an old boomer myself, living parasitically off social (in)security.

We are homeschooling our two kids. (Yes, I am in my mid-60's with young children. Proof that I'm not the brightest bulb in the fixture!) I really, really like the idea of online college as they transition into that. Hopefully we can find a program that is cost effective AND gives them an employable skill.

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8358039.post-59717815085167819532023-05-04T17:24:05.881-07:002023-05-04T17:24:05.881-07:00Great article Cappy.

I'm in Ontario. 60% of our provincial budget goes to just two things: education and health care.
With most of the school infrastructure paid for, unsurprisingly that taxpayer money is funneled to teachers busy brainwashing kids rather than educating them. 88% of school board spending goes to salaries. In Ontario the teachers are either striking or preparing for the next strike. It doesn't matter which of the three parties are in power either.

But there is hope as the post-secondary monopoly seems to be cracking.

Already there is plenty of free education available for people to get ahold of. For old farts like me, there's youtube videos whenever I need to fix something from simple to sort of complex (or figuring out it ain't worth fixin).

MIT has virtually all its courses online for free. Not bad for a $60K per year uni.
Google offers free courses for a variety of mostly tech-related skills and offers certification.
That's just the tip of the iceberg. I came across this after a quick search:
https://www.classcentral.com/report/free-certificates/

Children with involved parents could be learning real skills for little or no cost when they aren't in daytime indoctrination centers.

Better yet, they might find out what they are good at/enjoy well before they leave high school.

thanks
PaulAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
