The Current Account Deficit

There seems to be confusion abound about the current account deficit and exactly what it means. Oh sure, economists will say;

" The net flow of current transactions, including goods, services, and interest payments, between countries."

And then they wonder why they don't get dates.

So here is a more real world, simplified application of the current account;

How much more do we consume than we produce as a country.

Or perhaps

How much more do we spend than we earn as a country.

For as Americans have become more lazy and slothful, yet our appetite for SUVs, flat screen TV's, clothes, etc., has not abated, we have to rely on somebody to loan us the money to afford all these things. Thus each year for the past 23 years, we here in America have spent more than we made, and particularly so in the last year, spending a full 6% more than what we produced.

And while we are used to being able to roll over our debts, consolidate them into interest deductible mortgages and refinance at lower rates, that party will surely end soon should even the slightest economic recession hit us as it will be magnified by our gluttonous appetite for debt.

Of course the upside to this is that we nerdy economists who have been paying down our debts, investing in foreign assets and paying cash for our used 1994 Oldsmobile, will all of the sudden become sexy. And the chicks who once chased after Fabio and his 100% leveraged Cadillac Escalade and Interest Only/ARM-financed 4 bedroom house in the suburbs, will become disenchanted with his filing for bankruptcy and be chasing after us for they will appreciate the merits of equity financing...

NAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!

Don't Hate Us Because We're Beautiful

Just cut your tax rates and free up your labor markets, knock off the socialism and you'll be beautiful too!

Bend Over So that China May Kick Your Ass

I found this chart fascinating and confirming of what I've always suspected;

That China is only communist in name and is the worst threat to American supremacy;

A pro-capitalist dictatorship that actually knows what it's doing.

It's like a small nimble company that can make executive decisions without worrying about all the minor political ramifications, unlike their larger, slothful big corporation counter parts that just can't seem to move as quick to take advantage of the market.

So while we compromise and meet in the middle to in effect, effect impotent legislation, and further deteriorate into French-like mediocrity, the likes of China and Saudi Arabia (see how they're building a fence, no questions asked, ef the minority and dissenters we're moving on to progress and advance) are making moves to improve themselves.

Silent on the Economy - Latest Unemployment Stats

Look, guys in New York sitting atop your Manhattan skyscrapers.

The whole US does not consist of burnout baby boomer wanna be's who protest all the time because their lives are so void and vapid they have to come up with false crusades to make themselves feel better.

Work = Wealth

The more you work, the richer you become.

Of course, simple concepts and laws like these run contrary to leftist thought and ideology so what people like me have to do is prove it.

So here is the average hours worked per year for the average person in the following OECD countries (most recent data available);

(Note our good French friends are on the lower end of the scale.)

Anyway, that's all nice and well, but if we want to establish the relationship between work and wealth production we have to take a more longitudinal look.

So what I did was take the 5 and 10 year average hours worked per year and correlated them against the 5 and 10 year average RGDP growth rates of all the OECD countries.

(correlation coefficient of .67)

(correlation coefficient of .47)

And surprise surprise (to the socialists anyway), the more you work...

GASP!

THE HIGHER YOUR ECONOMIC GROWTH!!!!!!

Will the amazing science we've all come to know and love known as economics ever cease to amaze?

Government Fun!

So whilst digesting the OECD's 2006 Factbook I happened upon an interesting chart;

Household expenditure on recreation and culture as a % of GDP;
Seems the good ol' Anglo Saxons spend the most and thus live it up the most spending 6% or more on life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Then there was another chart;

Government expenditure on recreation and culture.

Good lord, if a freaking barometer for socialism didn't exist, it exists now!

Nothing better than the government TELLING you what you're going to have fun with and enjoy.

Then again, at least some money is spent on recreation and culture, albeit inefficiently by the government.

I'd be curious to see similar charts for Arab countries.

Trailer Homes

I'm not a big fan of trailer folk. And I don't care how Republican they are or how they have a "Support Our Troops" magnet on their Monte Carlo or Ford F-150 along with their NASCAR paraphernalia, I'd really rather talk to an academian liberal. Seriously, that's how much disdain I have for the Trailer Park People.

Well the Census Bureau has some interesting information. Seems they polled what percent of housing was mobile homes.

Scarily enough some states have mobile homes accounting for nearly 1 in 5 of all homes.

I'd rather hang out at a Dunn Brothers.

A Popularity Contest

I always viewed Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) as a popularity contest of countries' economies. Not too unlike high school.

FDI is investment from foreign countries into yours. This is a good thing as the more of it you have the better your economy does. Foreign firms (and governments) want to set up shop in your country to produce goods or sell their goods/services there. This provides employment and boosts GDP.

Typically countries that have lower taxes, low regulation, open markets, and other such fascist imperialistic capitalistic abonimations will attract FDI, just as a high school girl that has big boobs, a tight body and a pretty face will attract the boys.

Thus when we compare FDI INFLOWS and OUTFLOWS as a percent of GDP for various countries, you get a really good idea as to who the most popular girls in high school are.

Alas it seems Ireland and Luxembourg are the most popular girls who receive all the attention, but return very little of it. And if you look for those cute girls next door you'll note Poland, the Czech and the Slovak Republics are also quite popular...I always loved girls in high school with a flat tax.

A Very Vichy Compromise

http://today.reuters.com/news/newsarticle.aspx?type=worldNews&storyid=2006-03-31T201219Z_01_L28207566_RTRUKOC_0_US-FRANCE.xml&rpc=22

Let's Talk Unemployment

My stats on long term unemployment were questioned several times about whether they were standardized and thus I thought this would be a good time to address the issue of standardized unemployment rates.

Yes, different countries do measure their unemployment rates differently. This results in incomparable data and is why Japan has always had what was considered an absurdly low unemployment rate. However, institutions such as the BLS, OECD and ILO do standardize the rates, allowing us to compare them against one another.

On March 28th, the OECD came out with their OECD Factbook 2006, thus putting me in a quandry;

Do I hold true to my economic principles and promptly cancel my date with the impossibly gorgeous blond or

Go out with the blond knowing I have betrayed the Sacred Economic Order.

Regardless, in the Factbook they had standardized rates which would prove useful;

What was also interesting was that they broke down the unemployment rates for men and women. I thus subtracted the female unemployment rate from the male unemployment rate to see where the men were pulling more of their own weight.

It seems Greece and other central European countries have more of their men working than women. Ireland has more of their women working than their men. Alas, it seems this is more of a measure of which countries keep their women at home and not necessarily a reflection upon a stronger male work ethic...it is also futher proof I want a Irish girl.

CNN is for Lefties

If you need any more proof that CNN and its viewers are to the left, you need look no further.

Nor do you need too look further for proof that Americans are just as stupid in their grossly negligent understanding of economics.

Oh, and we will pay for our ignorance.

HAR!!!

Helen Thomas,

Yeah,

Fat, ugly, old, pissed off socialist chicks are always fun to make fun of.

The Captain Takes a Vacation

Greetings fellow Aspiring and Junior Deputy Economists!

As you may have noticed (and some of you pointed out/e-mailed me/asked me about) postings are rather curt and focusing a bit more on the charts and a little bit less on analysis. While the gist of Captain Capitalism is to provide you with the empirical evidence you need to wage your own battle against the forces of socialism unfortunately I have been blessed with an ungodly and an incomprehensible amount of luck and success. Revenues for my dance classes and seminars have broken all records, online classes had record enrollments, prospective clients on the horizon and not to mention the radio gig.

All those things considered, I was still able to provide you with the latest and greatest in economic data and statistics. However, this most recent slump you may have noticed is not due to tax season (although that is a factor) but an absolutely freaking hot gorgeous blond that I has captured my attention over the past week.

I could literally write pages about the girl, but you will of course forgive me for taking a wee bit of a sabbatical.

Besides, the never ending battle against the forces of socialism must occasionally yield to the occasional flirtatious skirmish with the local smoking hot blond insurgents. And if I don't deal with them, who will?
