I've noticed that the people who complain about "Big Oil" wouldn't be doing anything productive even if they weren't complaining about Big Oil, so it's not like there much opportunity cost there. They'd just be pushing for ethanol or environmental regulations or bigger budgets for the bottomless money-pits we call public schools.
