So I was playing volleyball when the bridge collapsed, I got back and had about 7 voicemails seeing if I was OK. And instead of spending an hour calling everybody back, I figured I'd just post to let everybody know, yes, indeed, I am still alive.
What's scary is I took this bridge at least twice a day, and more back when going to college. The bridge is just 2 miles down the road from my old place. Have to head into the city, might see if I can get some decent pictures for you all.
Glad to hear you're okay. AtlasBlogged's own G-Dawg is up your way right now, too... a little hard to get ahold of, but apparently safe.
ReplyDelete2 for 2, and as I don't know anybody else up that way, my interest in the situation now turns to the engineering.
Nice to hear that you're OK. But still, it's a great tragedy which probably could've been prevented.
ReplyDeleteI'm eagerly awaiting your commentary on why this had to happen, e.g. how much of the state/local budget is actually directed to such important things like infrastructure and highways.
I've just read a short article which said that 10 percent of all bridges in Germany are in desperate need of repair and are considered unsafe. The government spends 50% of GDP and still has no money to finance road building...
Good to hear! There would have been tribute for your passing on my website if the unthinkable had happened - just as well, i'm too busy for that! :)
ReplyDeleteGood to hear you're alright.
ReplyDeleteDo you think more transportation funding would have made a difference, or would that just increase the opportunities for waste and corruption?
Wulf - Hey, if it isn't too late, have G-Dawg contact me, we'll get a beer.
ReplyDeleteDtrum - Actually, I don't know if it could have been prevented. I'm putting my money on this bridge collapsing for a faulty rivet or something. People are quick to claim underfunding, GW, or some PERSON responsible for it. I think it's just going to be a crack that was unforeseen.
Frank - Thank you for your concern. Should I die I will rely upon you to tell the masses and write my epithat.
Ryan - See my latest post, it will more or less answer your question.
Glad you're still with us. The world doesn't need any more great dead economists.
