ADD? It's called "boredom". That's why the "sufferers" are predominanlty male. They're sick of classes that teach them nothing, of bossy women who won't talk about anything except feminism, gay sex, etc.
I know one young man from Chicago who officially had ADD. In fact he was intelligent, restless, and mainly interested in sports. He wanted to go into the military, a perfect place for him - he wasn't a bad kid, he just needed plenty to do, and strong discipline. He is handsome and would look great in a uniform. He'd be a good soldier and a real credit to the Army. Well, his mother is a bleating pacifist, the father is bone lazy, and the grandfather is another bleating pacifist. It has not ended well.
I know another young man, a few years younger than the first. Much the same. His mother and grandmother were much upset by his restlessness, his tendency to get into all and everything. They are good women, real women, but they are women. Well, fortunately, the mother took up with a Newfoundland fisherman down on the Burin Peninsula. The fisherman took to the boy, and between his heavy hand and the hard dangerous (but profitable) work on board the fishing boat, the boy is doing fine. Happy, calm, useful, etc. A man among men.
Medication to treat ADD isn't for the kid with ADD, it's for the adults who have to deal with them.
Some kids don't focus on one thing for a long time very well. It's not dangerous, it's just annoying for adults who are trying to slot them into routines that involve a lot of sitting around and focusing on one thing for extended periods of time.
Suggesting that a father with a stern hand can fix this is a little stupid. You can't force a kid with a short attention span to focus just by smacking him around every once in a while.

Profoundly troubling. A bunch of addicts scrounging for their next fix.
