So I like to study films. I totally like, ummmm....watching movies and stuff. But dude, why am I unemployed??? It's that f@cking George Bush and those republicans keeping me down man!
Ahhh, if only you idiotic children (and that's what you are) purchased "Worthless."
I saw that article and thought "This is just one big ad for Worthless waiting to happen"
ReplyDeleteEver thought about trying to get advertising on Gawker?
Maybe just send a few free copies to their office, to get their blood boiling.
Some people will never get it. Maybe that person could use his film degree as toilet paper next time. That's really what it is. Overpriced toilet paper.
ReplyDeleteIn this economy, even a lot of engineers are unemployed.

And talk about an unfun way to go through college. There is no harder major. Physics, chemistry, also high unemployment which is why we see a boost in the number of BS graduates pursuing masters and doctorates.
Furthermore, even healthcare fields are experiencing a problem. I know several women who obtained their RNs and couldn't find work after even though they applied everywhere in the state of florida and were willing to move. No hires for RNs without at least a year's worth of work experience and no way to get it.
"I'm so depressed over my state in life I can't seem to find the energy to care enough to survive."
ReplyDeleteDarwin never sleeps.
I was more struck by the second story. One of the following is sure to happen:
ReplyDelete(a) Women come to accept that, as the professional equal of a man, she must be ready to assume the role of sole breadwinner, and be sexually aroused by her husband's diligent housekeeping and childcare.
(b) Women are barred from all but a few traditionally female professions (e.g. teaching), and men are hired to take their places.
(c) Millions of hungry, jobless, childless, hopelessly celibate men tear down our feeble, feminized society in an orgy of theft, rape and cannibalism. What have they got to lose?
Hint: (a) won't happen because it's against woman's nature.
I know two people, one is my manager and the other is a good friend, who are studying film. There is always awkward silence when I ask them what they are going to do when they graduate, followed by a "I don't know".
ReplyDeleteAlso, I am studying physics and I am wondering what I can get at the BSc level?
Undoubtedly the game is rigged against young graduates, as work experience is the order of the day since colleges are simply not doing their job in turning out the type of people business needs to function properly. But majoring in film and library science is like cutting off your feet before you begin the race. How people, even young people, arrive at choices like these is beyond me.
ReplyDeleteWhat, no minor in Comparative Basket Weaving?

I did a film degree and graduated in 2000.
ReplyDeleteChasing filmmaking is a dream not a job. I too was from a "Hollywood of the Mid-West" only in Canada...which is even worse on so many counts.
We all made student films starring ourselves and talking arrogantly about who was better...Tarantino or Fincher etc.etc.
We all thought we'd go on to Producing, Directing and fulfilling visions on the big screen. Making statements and the millions to go with it.
When I graduated I took to plunge and headed to LA and tried to be the next Steven Spielberg.
I consequently got my ass handed to me and racked up over $20,000 in debt.
I moved home to Mom and Dad's house and got involved in local television news. This at least provided me with a slightly below average annual income, but as time went on I realized it was a dead end.
I went back to school for something much more primal and needed. Something people would pay for and be glad to do it after you provided the service.
I became an EMT.
Now I work in the Canadian Oil Sands providing medical treatment to people in the work camps and am making more money then I ever have before. If I get a bit more schooling I can make double this!
If I had to do it over again I would have enjoyed film for all it's worth and gotten a real job right out of the gates.
Alas, it was a dream that turned into a nightmare and sometimes the best way to learn things is through the school of hard knocks.
When I woke up and realized that nobody was going to pay me to direct an X-Men movie, but they would pay me anything to re-start their unbeating heart, my new life began!
It's never too late to change course.
