Environmental activist is hit and killed by an SUV while walking across America barefoot to raise awareness about climate change Mark Baumer, an environmental activist, was struck by a SUV on Saturday He planned to walk from Rhode Island to California barefoot on the side on roads The 33-year-old hiked across the country in 2010 but wore shoes on that trip
One caveat: studying STEM can be just as big of a waste as studying the humanities.
You noted that accounting is the only worthwhile business degree. Well, electrical engineering, chemical engineering and medicine/dentistry/nursing are the only worthwhile STEM fields to go into. This is because you can still find jobs in these fields, although they too have their problems.
If you're going to study some sort of biology (such as microbiology, neural sciences, marine biology, etc.), geology, meteorology, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, packing engineering, botany, physics or chemistry---you may be wasting your time. Universities have been pumping-out far too many people with these degrees than the market can absorb, and in many cases these people are not all that intelligent. The curriculums have been dumbed-down to accommodate the stupid.
As someone that discontinued a PhD, I can assure you that there is plenty of waste in science, especially the health-related and biology fields. Frankly, so much of what scientists call "research" is really just extracting funds to do stupid things. Thus, it's yet another employment vehicle.
When I finally realized I didn't know shit from shinola, I began to think I might have some intelligence. But in reaching the bottom of the rabbit hole, I can only come to a singular conclusion. I lived a life as nothing more than an intelligent amoeba instinctively reacting to hormonal releases triggered by external stimuli.
What finally pushed me over the edge was digesting the harsh, unforgiving truth of Mother Nature. My sperm is cheaper than dirt. My body only useful as long as it provides support for eggs. The bottom of the rabbit hole is a dark, scary place. But that is where the truth resides.
I do not encourage any man to go that far. I feel as if I have opened a Pandora's Box of things men were never meant to know, and for a very good reason. At the bottom of the rabbit hole of forbidden knowledge is the reason for a man's existence. Which, sadly, very sadly, is - nothing.
Breath fills my lungs. My heart pumps fluids through my systems. My eyes see. My ears hear. My mind and soul are at peace. But peace is not what a man needs. Yet, at the bottom of the rabbit hole that is all there is - and now, truthfully, all I desire for the moment.
But, I will scratch at the bottom of the rabbit hole until I unite with the singularity from whence I came. A warrior explorer in the realm of the unknown with peace in his heart and a still inquisitive mind. Wish me luck. Cheers.

Nice rant! Yep, I found out on the first day of my first real job after earning my BS in a STEM discipline, that I did not know jack shit. My first year on the job, was a learning of new skills, I only used maybe 10% of what I learned in college. As the years go by, I use less and less of what I actually learned in college. On the job learning and training has benefitted me more in my career than college. Plus learning stuff on my own, such as reading books, trade journals, and the interwebs, has also helped me in my chosen career. Learning is lifelong process, and it doesn't end when you get some nicely printed piece of paper with your name on it indicating you've check all the boxes over x-amount of time.
Yes, I have been professionally tested for IQ a few times. It's fairly high, but that doesn't mean jack squat unless you back it up with hard work. Sure, you may have the intellectual ability, but 100% of success is showing up and doing the hard work. Sure you can have all the potential, but if you don't back it up with kinetic, you ain't going anywhere.
I've talked with a few college age millennials asking what their "major" is at school. The overwhelming majority of them, both male and female are in liberal arts majors. I laugh at them on the inside, and just shake my head at their stupidity. Sorry kids, you are stupid. Your liberal arts degree printed on that nice piece of paper is just some rough toilet paper for when you can't afford the real thing, because you were too stupid to major in something of value. I also question the dumbass parents who are paying for these crap degrees? What the hell are they thinking letting their kids do this act of stupidity in majoring in liberal arts? You might as well just burn the cash instead of giving it to the money grubbing universities for a useless liberal arts degree.
I must say, It's been one of the greatest pleasures of my life to be in technonolgy, a field that allows for a certain level of anti-social behavior. A field that allowed me to call PHDs "Dr. Stupid" to their face.
As in "I'm not stupid, you know. I have a PHD in economics" - "OK, Dr. Stupid, at least your email is working now"
or "..I can mathematically prove man's spirit" - "Really? You're in sales, Dr. Stupid. Why don't you mathematically prove how you are going to sell more of our gear and make us money?"
Education makes you a democrat, apparently. https://econjwatch.org/articles/faculty-voter-registration-in-economics-history-journalism-communications-law-and-psychology
another great cappy post. Certainly be careful if you are going to get a degree, get the right one.
One of my friends sons decided to become a welder. Six months out of high school, making good money.
One of my sons friends got an ENGLISH degree. YEP. got an internship or two, bounced around for a few years with no real work. He just completed an 18 month program to catch him up in STEM and is about to enter medical school. this is FIVE FULL YEARS AFTER GRADUATING FROM COLLEGE. So he won't really start working until 15 years after graduating from high school.
I blame at least some of this on the future doctors parents. They should have done at least some steering. But they are democrats of the "do what you love and the money will follow" group.
The story writes itself:

Environmental activist is hit and killed by an SUV while walking across America barefoot to raise awareness about climate change

He planned to walk from Rhode Island to California barefoot on the side on roads

Appeal to credentialism...
