Capn, I am afraid you are falling for the James Dean Trap like so many other generations have before you.
James Dean Trap - verb - The phenomenon that a counter culture movement by both its excesses and adoption becomes the 'norm' of society. By consequence it become the normal pattern of societal ethos and fades away.
JD was before your time, mine too, but the fact is he was the counter culture icon of his period. Problem was that within 3-4 years of his busting on the scene every punk, hipster and wannabe was wearing jeans 3" too long, a white V neck T and a pack of cigs rolled up in his sleeve.
If somebody is going to be abnormal they better pick a shtick that IS unique AND hard to adopt.
Normalcy is conformity.
