His "recent" publications are one each in 2011 and 2012 and two in 2015. Three years ago.
In three of them he is last author, two of which have 7 or more authors in total.
This is why he is getting into social justice issues. He can't do real physics with real physicists. All those awards he cites were affirmative action (it's Canada, what do you expect?).
I've seen this with women in STEM positions like this. Scratch the surface and you find their work is superficial and they almost always end up in either administration or some social justice activity.
The two exceptions I've known have only proved the general rule.
I don't think the issue is math isn't afrocentric enough. They couldn't even fill all the seats. Lack of interest in math is probably the culprit, with numerous root causes behind them.
Dig a little into this Dr. Hewitt's publications.
