You Can Have New Cars OR a Fully Funded Retirement. NOT BOTH

Choose wisely.

And if you're having trouble spending less may I recommend Poor Richard's Retirement?

Cappy, if it makes you feel better I'm still driving my Nissan and plan to until it hits 200,000/totally breaks down. It's honestly doing great. It's 18 years old, got it used from my parents. I'm a girl though. We're better listeners.

  2. Have had only 1 new vehicle in my life -- Mazda SE 5 pickup. Put 300k on the odo and ended up selling it for $200. That was 20yrs ago. All the other vehicles I have ever bought were two years old at acquisition. Keep them two years then sell. That is typically when the mileage ticks over and the mfr warranty expires.

  3. I drove my Prius pass 200k miles. Unfortunately I got to get rid of it as there's a crime wave near my neighborhood of (and I kid you not) catalytic converter. My car's exhaust system was stolen and that was the last straw.

I bought my Toyota pickup new in 1998. 20 years and 200,000 plus miles later, my awesome old truck is still going strong and helping me keep my rentals maintained. I paid $12,500.00 cash with all taxes and tags. I got my money's worth and continue to do so.

The secret to longevity with any vehicle is changing the fluids and filters. The engine oil is important, but, change the transmission fluid and brake fluid as well. Some Toyota trucks have rust problems, so have your vehicle rust proofed if you live in a road salt area. I bought a professional rust proofing sprayer and rust proof my vehicles for twenty bucks of material per year. They use lots of road salt where I live.

Just about any vehicle can hit 200 K miles if you maintain it. You pay good money for a vehicle, why not drive it until it dies?
