Well, apprenticeship programs pretty much all but disappeared except for commercial trucking. All other trades have only been hiring friends, family, and H1-B's for the last three decades at least. I went to trade school back in 2008, and it didn't matter what trade I picked, the school flat out told me, there was no guarantee of job placement after completing the program. This ranged from Automotive Repair, Autobody Repair, Electrician, Welding, HVAC, CAD Drafting/Architecture, Carpentry, O & D Level Airplane Maintenance, Air Traffic Control, and Nursing.

  2. Drives me nuts when I hear old manager that went through an apprenticeship program 50 years ago say they can't find any skilled tradesmen to hire. Hello have you tried hiring a helper and train him.

  3. Well it depends. The college I teach at has landed a deal with Bombardier to train their personnel on AP airframe maintenance. We are providing the space, a sister campus providing the instructional staff. We are only one of a few places to learn how to do airframe construction.

As to the overall concept. What the article actually points out is that the Corps have reached the low point and screwed their own pooch. When I worked the cube farms the firms I worked for had their own in-house training staffs. Well that costs money and companies got tired of competitors stealing their efforts. So they cut training loose. They kept stealing talent and that worked for awhile, but slowly the talent pool dried up. Oh, and they are finding that the H-1B route though cheap has dangers (See Boeing, fired CEO, trigger being cheap and hiring $9hr foreign programmers for MCAS on 737Max.) So out of desperation they have to revive the training apprenticeships that should not have been abandoned.

All I can say is, we Boomers were kinda dull in the 'flash in pan' dept. But you have to sex it up for the Millenials or they won't show.

So now it's obvious even to the oblivious Boomers out there that the entire Edifice of University Education [reverb] doesn't serve any purpose except at best to put some extra ink on top of Zahavi's handicap principle ...

Shut it down! Shut it down forever!

If Roger Scruton's wondering out loud whether it's a good idea ...

    Yeah.

Shut it down! Shut it down forever!
