Basically, woman bored with ordinary life, seeks fame in Somalia because no-one goes there, convinces ex-boyfriend to tag along. Then, when they get kidnapped for ransom, call home for help. When ex-boyfriend's family manage to scrape together $500k to pay the ransom (kidnappers were asking for $1 million and apparently his family did a better job of raising the cash) she tells her mum to use the money to just get her out if since it's not enough for both of them. Here's the kicker: her mum couldn't touch the money because it was in an Australian bank account! So after everything he went through because of her, she still tried to throw him under a bus! Understandably, he won't speak to her any more.
You gave it the wrong year in the podcast date. It should be 13, not 12.
