Here in Germany we have the same shit going on - the "skills shortage" necessitates immigration. It's all bullshit and everybody knows it. But when the populace fears expressing the politically incorrect truth, because everything you say against foreigners is automatically considered xenophobic, nobody speaks up out of fear of ostracism and ruining their career. At least you don't have that problem in America.
Sadly, this just proves that there are PC HR clowns in every company of any size. I work as an engineer for one of those companies mentioned in the article. The eye-rolling from the dictates of the corporate HR department would keep us dizzy all the time, if we paid attention to it. Fortunately, my superiors manage to keep the engineering staff insulated from the worst of it.
And yes, big engineering firms DO have a problem hiring and retaining talent. Especially on the hardware side. American college kids seem to want to major in "hobbies" instead of hard engineering, as the Captain has pointed out over and over. So, sometimes those big engineering firms have no choice but to hire abroad.
Also, bear in mind that some kinds of innovation can't be done on the cheap in the garage. These days, if you're a talented engineer or scientist and you want to design and build the biggest, baddest, fastest, most complicated computing systems in the world, you're not going to do it in a basement. You join an engineering company like HP, Cisco or Sun that shares a passion for kind of work you want to do.

True, but what if I, as an engineer, don't give a shit about tv's, smartphones, apps and the like? We practically have a large part of the global economy geared towards providing the masses with a quick dopamine fix. Short-term thinking dominates. The future? Nobody cares about that.
It's no wonder we physically still can't do anything beyond a low earth orbit.
I am currently doing this, screwing over my company, and thats going to continue for the rest of my days.
like many productive employees, i have been kept down and limited raises; while i have literally done someone else's job while they slept at their desk.
i finally had enough. today, i figure out how much work i need to do to get done whats needed and routinely do something that's not been done because others didnt know how or were too lazy. some days i feel terrible not trying to be at max efforts but i've been played for a fool by my dept for years and thats enough.
my sick days are now additional vacation days, my boss's sick and vacation days are days to do as i please and if i can figure out how to start a buiness while working for someone else i'm going to do it. corporations have been double dipping for years, i think its my turn.

They are going full retard here with feminism too, it's one male bashing article after the other in the media. I'm getting real tired of it.
