Hey Captain, OT, but when it comes to taxes we know that corporate taxes and capital gains/dividends tax is destructive. In your opinion which kinds of taxes should be lowered considerable/eliminated and which would you keep r even raise?
"Broadening the knowledge base among Chinese leaders seems sensible. The biggest challenges in China today are no longer primarily related to technology or infrastructure, but rather to rampant corruption, public desire for increased civil liberties, and slowing economic growth"
This is a great example of how the intelligentsia cannot exercise critical thinking skills. How exactly does a degree in political science enable someone to deal with rampant corruption or civil liberties? It doesn't.
Moreover how exactly does a political science degree holder know how to deal with a slowing economy? Oh right, the same old idea of bread and circuses, the politicians' standby.
- 15 of the world's 20 dirtiest cities are in China.
- Because the traditional chinese family values males more than females, female infanticide is a huge problem. In 20 years males will vastly outnumber the available females. Feminism will take a huge upswing as women weild more sexual clout than you can shake a stick at. What could possibly go wrong...?
- 15% of the water that comes out of the tap is potable
- their economic bubble will pop the second after America's. They are building ghost CITIES that have no people living in them.
It is gonna be Mutiny On The Bounty over there in less than a few decades. You might want to run the cannons out Captain.
Captain, while I generally like replacing every tax with a sales tax, a sales tax doesn't put the burden of the cost of government on those who use it.
The only fair general tax is a head tax and a property tax to pay for military and police as they protect you and your property. Of course criminal fines could help put some of the cost of law enforcement on the criminals.
Everything else should be paid for by user fees. Roads with milage or gas taxes. Parks with park fees. Oh, and the government "charity" by donations.

Of course, it doesn't. However, its much worse than that. Hard fields such as engineering produce wealth. Engineers and other "hard" people tend to start businesses that result in real wealth creation. The "soft" fields such as political science and the like produce nothing. Hence, you have a transfer of leadership from people whose backgrounds involve the production of stuff to those whose do not.
I've been saying for years China is not a threat to us. They invaded Vietnam, of all places, and got their asses handed to them in no time flat. And the Japanese just raped them. Militarily they're a joke.
One hundred percent of their economic growth has been due to the U.S., just as Mexico's has. Economically they're a joke.
Being good at math and engineering means nothing when you have no creativity. Just think of old saying, "Whites create and Asians copy."

Well, they went for a primarily agricultural society to a mainly manufacturing society much faster then the US did. (broadly speaking)
No reason their decline should not be faster as well.
Anti-corruption czar Wang Qishan read history at Northwest University in Xian
I always wondered how to say Elizabeth Warren in Chinese, now I know. It's "Wang Qishan."
Jorge,
Eliminate ALL taxes and consolidate them into
ONE
SINGLE
sales tax.
Benefits - no tax forms to fill out, revenues will tell you how the economy is doing, AND
you know the price of taxation. No hidden taxes, no "fees" and no room for politicians to hide taxes.
One tax, one price of government, even the idiot Americans can understand that.

Not so, Skipper.
China is a dead man walking.

You mean communism didn't work for the umpteeth time. Oh well at least Cuba and North Korea are still the beacons out there.

This does not bode well for China.

Well,
They could secede their operations into two branches:
1) Logistics
2) Public relations
Xi Jingping is charismatic and could be used to bring the people along to the party's doctrine.
While the scientists and engineers, who hold the balance of power, stay in the shadows and maintain the government in order.
So the Chinese government should split it's operations in two different activities:
1) Those who make things work in an optimal manner (engineers, scientists).
2) Those who talk to the people and convince them (Xi Jingping)

So why should the burden of tax collection and tax accounting fall on the hands of merchants and sellers ?
