There used to be more to university than money, but then the courses were dumbed down to allow every idiot to get a degree that you don't learn anything you couldn't get out of a beginner's text book unless you go onto a higher degree. Even then, most of them are not worth the paper they are printed on.
I've also heard a US college degree is the equivalent of a HS education in Aus.

I believe there's a book by professors from Columbia pointing out much the same thing, college is rapidly becoming overrated.
