No, EvilWhiteMaleEmpire, you don't go to college for cooking. I know there's an Asshole video on the topic somewhere. If you go to college for cooking, what do you major in anyway? Would it be with a minor in warming up water? I can imagine a PhD with a dissertation titled "Cross-sectional analyses of factors affecting the taste of microwaved leftovers: a comparison of 120 kitchens." Oh wait, "professional" cooks can't do math. That won't work.
Can't disagree with Evil, cooking schools have added greatly to our overall enjoyment of life. Go to James Lileks' Gallery of Regrettable Food and see what passed for quality cooking in the USA in the 50's.......garbage!
Now, every restaurant, college dorm, sorority, fraternity or decent food service has a trained cook or chef heading up their efforts. Even hotel restaurants have upped the ante. Places/schools like this did make a difference.
The real problem with places like this is the ratio of Tuition and other costs to the likely financial gains from attending. The vast majority of the graduates end up making only slightly above minimum wage working in a bar or a low end diner.
I have to agree with Chris on this one. Most students will cook fries at McDonald's. The "lucky" ones will cook pancakes at iHop and only 1 in a 1000 will work at the Ritz Carleton.
In the meanwhile, culinary schools introduce the disease of credentialism to an already saturated job market and increases the burden of job hunters.
Now, it will require a degree to cook breakfast at a low end diner, adding an additional barrier to entry for many talented cookers.
Maybe it's the whole credentalism thing that Cappy denounces.
If we continue further down this road, it will require a college degree and post doctorate thesis to apply for a minimum wage job cleaning toilets.

I don't know about this one.
This isn't exactly a degree in basket weaving.
There is something to be said for good cooking.
Especially since it's so lacking in our women these days.
OT.
I first saw the Chinese Star Wars poster on this blog. I thought you may want to see this from CNN.
Chinese state media hits back at claims of racist 'Star Wars' poster:
