The word "recession" has meaning only to macroeconomics professors, journalists, and politicians. Good people find jobs during recessions. Good businesses sell product during recessions.
Those whose wages and commissions depend upon sales weren't complaining when we were in a boom - and most of them weren't saving either. They chose a profession with lower job security and higher pay volatility and were compensated justly for that.
It's like Mike McDermott said in Rounders:
"Few players recall big pots they have won, strange as it seems, but every player can remember with remarkable accuracy the outstanding tough beats of his career."
