At least on a positive note, this looks like it'll pave the way for some good 'ol fashioned technological advance http://www.allosphere.ucsb.edu/Now if only it weren't in the hands of academics >_<.
Here are predictions from the first Earth DayJudging from the "World of the Future" video, George Orwell's 1984, Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged, and Star Trek, I think the crystal balls in the 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s were much better quality than the 70s and beyond.
It's not the future until I get a jetpack.
