It seems to me that a college degree has become the 'new' status symbol, being valued for its appearance alone. This also possibly explains how females have increasingly demanded that their degrees in 'Women's Studies' and '18th Century Lesbian Poetry' have the same value as STEM degrees (and therefore they should be paid the same as scientists, engineers, and technicians).

Status symbols have to be rare. Everyone can't be elite. People are just avoiding life and work.
