Bachelor Pad Economics

For all the single, swinging bachelors out there, permit me a great bit of financial advice.

Clippers.

Drop the $35 on a good pair of clippers and you'll earn back your money easy within a month or two.

Now some of you will complain that you are not barbers, let alone self-styling ones, and therefore you will not be able to cut your own hair.

That is why you hence forth resign yourself to the buzz cut.

No doubt some of you will earn back your clippers in just one shaving in that you drop $35 on a hair cut. Others it will take 3 or 4 shaves if you go to a Great Clips to earn your clippers. Regardless, by a year's time going by, you'll certainly earn more than you did your 401k.

I have also found it a great way to get pampered by women who want to cut your hair.

Don't ask me how it works, I've learned long ago to stop asking why.

It's a Samson and Delilah thing. They all think that by cutting your hair you'll be weak and forever in their power.

On the other hand, USMC.

Sage advice. There is an alternative, though; grow your hair out. Once it's a foot or longer, you can just put it into a pony tail straight out of the shower and cut an inch off the end of that every once in a while. It takes all of ten seconds to give yourself a haircut, it's always even, and the development of Samson-like superpowers is not unheard of.

How about a pointer to a picture of the device in question? I keep thinking of "clipper" as being a synonym for "scissors", but that doesn't seem right.

I whole heartily agree. The men in my family have a finite (and unknown) number of hair cuts before they are resigned to go "buzz". My youngest brother hit that magic number when he was 19, I'm holding on but 30 seems to be the age limit at which the amount of scalp out paces that of hair.

Keeping things simple makes things less costly. Just like buying tools that allow you to maintain your car, clippers pay for themselves in very short order when compared to paying retail for the same service.

Other great example: Buy camping gear, on your next road trip a weeks worth of nights of camping will generate enough savings vs motel/hotels to pay for the gear. Once you cross that that payback threshold you can splurge for that motel room should it start to snow, and still be ahead.

Spot on, Captain. I haven't paid for a haircut since I was 18. Since I'm now 35, on my third set of clippers while buzzing my hair bi-weekly I've saved....ummm....carry the one....nevermind. I told myself there would be no math.

Anyhow, another bonus is that women seem to love rubbing the freshly cut head. Plus it makes me more aerodynamic!

Cappy Cap: You might have linked to Amazon's listings for "hair clippers for men", no? How about this page:

You're welcome.

I've had the same haircut for 40 years +/-. I like it. The amount I pay at a barber is well worth it, since I'm not in danger of starving.

I've had amateur hair cutters like Mom and Dad try to deal with my hair as a child. Epic Fail.

So I respectfully suggest you can take those clippers and buzz cut and stick both where the sun is very dim.

I do this. Bought a nice, high quality, setup from Wahl at the local Wal-Mart. You don't even have to resign yourself to one length all over, the nape of my neck is 3/8" and the very top is 1". I just have to find a nice looking competent woman to even up the back and it looks professional. Everyone seems shocked when I tell them I cut my own hair.

My SO cuts my hair using clipper, comb and scissors. Been doing it ever since we married 31 years ago.

She does a better job than most "stylists", because I have a terrible rooster tail (my Dad's genes are at fault for that) and my hair is extremely fine.

Add in the 25 years of doing the kids and we must have saved thousands.

I cut my own hair for years but the luxury of having a barber use a straight-razor on the back of one's neck is well worth it.
