H.L. Mencken once wrote an article in which he lamented that journalism was actually better in the days before most journalists were graduates of college journalism programs. Mencken himself was an example of the older and better journalist. I think the internet is taking us back to that earlier era when talented amateurs are entering the field in greater numbers instead of the untalented, incurious and ignorant journalism school grads who dominated it for years. I majored in journalism in college in the early eighties but went into accounting because I couldn't stand the thought of spending a career in journalism surrounded by the kind of people in my college journalism classes. It's a good thing the internet has allowed people like Matt to get an audience and help to break up the mainstream media monopoly.
