Part of your problem is buying laptops in the first place. Computation creates heat and laptops notoriously skimp on heatsinks to protect the electronics. As such, laptops run hot and die early -- especially ones that are supposed to be "thin" or "light" or "stylish". *cough* Apple *cough*
Buy a full size desktop, in standard mid-tower (box) form factor, if you want your computer to last. I expect at least 5 or 6 years out of mine with minor maintenance like a power supply replacement. If you can a car's change oil you can change your computer's power supply. No excuses.
As far as the forward march of computer technology, that's coming to an end in a few years. It has already slowed to half the pace it was a decade ago. Transistors are approaching the scale of dozens of atoms and there's no magic to get smaller than that.
The first digital computer solved differential equations for bombs and naval artillery. It was not faster than human mathematicians, it just made fewer errors.
