Seriously, the unions working for my city just rejected a proposal from the Mayor to cut the work week by 2.5 hours. That's right a whopping cut from 40 to 37.5 hours.
Only 40 of several thousand union members voted for the shorter work week. Despite the public promise from the Mayor that if they do not accept this cut in hours, a sizable number of employees will be laid off.
So much for the Unions looking out for the good of the whole.
Remember, the primary purpose of any organization is to maintain its own existence.
However, this same principle may also encourage corruption of the sort that will damage its long term survival. That is, a short term/local benefits are often seen as beneficial, even though they may conflict with long-term and/or founding principles.
