Yeah, but the uproar that would occur would be almost as loud as the uproar that WILL occur when there's no money left to pay for social security. That would make the retirement age (here in the US) 79 years old.
Riots? No, the politicians would just be replaced. The elderly have a powerful voter turnout. They don't call social security the third rail of politics for nothing.
It's just a pipe dream... social security will go broke before anyone bothers to change it.
Social security is an out dated idea. At almost any level you are given the option to have money put into an IRA or a money market or any one of numerous retirement plans. The problem is noone wants to give up a Nickle more of their check to anything. People live check to check and any reduction means the difference between living and starving.
Let the private sector handle retirement, they are better at it historically and mandate what went into SS go into that, remove the option.

As for the AARP, they are old, only politicians care what they have to say, oh guess thats all that matters.

It really should be the male life expectancy. That's what it was originally.

There'd be riots.
What are you talking about? See http://www.socialsecurity.gov/retire2/agereduction.htm
We are doing the same thing.
