Rantings and tirades of a frustrated economist.
I laughed out loud when I found the "Graduate student in poetry" on food stamps in the linked Salon article.Yeah, Rudyard Kipling (The greatest poet ever, IMHO) wasn't able to write poetry until he had his graduate degree.I have said this before-but if you want to be a poet/writer-do something, experience something that is different from your coffehouse peers. ie join the navy, work in the Bakken etc.
Posted TLP's post the other day on facebook. Blew up completely as aggrieved friends of mine thought I was demonizing "all their hard work." I told them it was the system that made you think all that "work" would pay off. "Republicans like you just want to demonize and hold down anybody that isn't white, male, blah blah blah."They still don't realize how complicit they were/are in their own problems. "Obama is going to hire 100K math/science teachers! He cares about education unlike you!""You didn't even specialize in that in school - all of you are trying to get jobs as history/english/elementary education teachers.""Well, he CARES..."One friend of mine asked on the thread, "What will it take to get people to wake up in this country?"I said, "A smart man once said, 'Enjoy the decline.'"
FL,I heard that too! Probably from the same smart guy!
I'm a big fan of The Last Psychiatrist, she (I strongly believe is a she) always writes something that shakes what I had for granted.I recommend the excellent post about Bullying (Who's afraid of Lil Wayne) or about the Nanny State: The Nanny State Didn't Show Up, You Hired It
