The Drumheller Fossil Hunt

So it turns out one of our agents in the field is an actual geologist with a passion for fossil hunting.  Me and Mr. Aurini decided to head out with the Official Cappy Cap Geologist to Drumheller, Alberta.  There we found not only the BEST collection of fossils in the world, but some badlands formations where we launched our very own fossil hunting expedition.

It was somewhat successful with some petrified wood discovered as well as some shells and fragments, however I strongly recommend visiting the Tyrrell Museum.

It's here on the net

And it's The ROYAL Tyrrell Museum. The Royal Tyrrell Museum is Canada’s only museum dedicated exclusively to the science of palaeontology. In addition to housing one of the world’s largest displays of dinosaurs.

I'm trying to figure it out... the three of us look like some sort of scary back-country folk whom you don't want to mess with.

The Deliverance Three!

My son and I have gone on a lot of fossil hunts with our local paleontology society. At the monthly meetings there are great lectures by professional paleontologists. Also there are a lot of really old guys and their devoted wives, in great shape I might add.

It's a great way to get access to remote areas while having a little backup support. Generally, there is no one for miles and miles around.

Aurini, "scary back-country folk" is not the phrase that came to my mind. More like "rough and ready MEN." If I were twenty years younger, I'd be placing orders for three suits of armor and plotting how to catch at least one of you.

What is the building in the last picture for?

Well, damn. Looks like I need to visit the area myself! Do my fossil-loving heart some good, as well as being in the middle of some stunningly beautiful terrain.

For the poster who asked about the building in the last picture it is an old grain elevator. Farmers used to take their grain there and then it was loaded onto train cars for transport for sale (used to be Thunder Bay but now mainly Vancouver). It is obviously abandoned as the majority were shut down in the late 90s and looks like the rail tracks are gone too.

Was this on the 570 at the ghost town of Dorothy; just outside of Drumheller?
