Rantings and tirades of a frustrated economist.
THE Occidental Hotel? In Buffalo, Wyoming? Geezz, I haven't thought of that place in years.Worked on a dude ranch up the road called Paradise Guest Ranch way back in the mid to late 60's... what a time for a 16 year old. Remember walking into the bar of the Occidental with the owner of said ranch (Wyoming Jack O'Brian by name) and seeing a rather large square rack on the wall by the entry. Had about a dozen pegs in it and gun belts with Colt peacemakers in most of them. Jack never carried in a holster so, just hung his Colt on the peg. Bar keep told him to hang the other one too. And to put the deringer on the stand below the rack. Jack was pretty well known.Never thought the Occidental nor Buffalo would go into the advertising and tourist trades. Oh well.
Anon,Yeah, I was at Paradise Ranch about a year ago. Still there and expanded. The Occidental is basically the nucleus to all of Buffalo. Ran by a real cowboy, and the men still carry their guns on their side into the place. People are very polite there for some reason.Cappy
Jumped on the Bing maps. WOW has the ranch changed!!!When I was there, we only had the main lodge with dining room, 12 log cabins and 1 wranglers cabin and 1 barracks. Looks like a modern, first class place now. Back then, folks came to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city.Remember that John Chase, of the Chase Manhattan Bank, was a guest. An extreme gentleman and very down to earth. A far cry from what is in banking at this time.Aahhh, such times and memories.
