I was told to THROW OUT EVERYTHING I LEARNED ABOUT JOURNALISM IN COLLEGE & that my delivery needed to be done 'on the fifth grade level' to match the writing style of the script.

I think journalism majors are tied with education and film majors for being the dumbest. I once took a 400 level film class because I needed it for an elective requirement, and when I exchanged papers with other students for peer-reviewing, I was shocked to see that they wrote no better than a 7th grader.

Just for the benefit of readers in the UK and elsewhere abroad, you should be aware that graduates of American teechirz collages overwhelmingly rank in the bottom quartile of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT, the test administered to high school seniors and used by universities to screen for admissions). Therefore those who teach not only can't do, but don't generally even know.
