For all it's huffing and puffing and invading, there are times I forget that Russia is actually quite a small economy.
Why can't it be more like Brazil or India? Do you ever hear of Brazil invading places, bothering people, producing terrorists? No, they just hang out there in the south, enjoy the weather and produce GDP.

Answer: Russian women vs. Brazilian women
Sure, Russian women are hot when they're young, but once they hit 27 it's all downhill.
Brazilian women stay hot into their 50's.
On a serious note (actually, I was being serious before), there's a strong correlation between technological advancement and cold climates. My hypothesis is that the need to develop sources of energy, shelter and secure food sources drove the northern hemisphere toward faster development. But too far north, and every day is just about survival.
In northern countries, there was also a desire to grab year-round fertile grounds and warm-water ports, so technological advancement went hand in hand with militarism.
Cases in point:
Europe vs. Africa
Northern US vs. Southern US
China vs. Vietnam or Korea

It's the alcohol. Brazilians don't need drinking to stay warm in the winter... ;-)
"Northern US vs. Southern US"
Are you alleging the North was militaristic?
