When Hippies Try to Do Economics

It's like liberals trying to run a business.

It seems more like the result of an artificially imposed constriction on supply rather than a lack of demand; this wouldn't be a problem if they could just sell it as they liked, and buyers could just buy it as they liked. The real mistake they made was trying to do it through legal channels. It ses so in the article; most people are sticking with their agorist suppliers.

Yes, but this is how they learn. Now they are learning about oversupply in a teensy tiny legal market. Witness the awesome power of price signalling, able to teach a lesson that all my careful explanation could not.
Get more hippies on the land, that's what I say. I am also wondering if they are using schedule f on their tax returns, since it is agriculture. Got to be some tax reduction strategies in there somewhere.

The new captcha is unusable.

I'll keep spamming the button until I can get something I can fucking read to post this.

Don't worry! Problems created by socialists can always be fixed by other socialists!!!

I am guessing here that because there are so many competitors in the market, capitalism could rear its ugly head and market competition could break out. Clearly, the answer here is to have the gubbermint step in: the number of licenses will have to be cut back dramatically. Only growers with the right political connections will be allowed in the market. Those that have been squeezed out can be hired on to fill vacancies in the newly created bureaucracies that will oversee pot production. Those that can't find jobs in the FBPP (Federal Bureau of Pot Production) will continue to sell on the illegal black market as they have always done! It's a win for everyone: gubbermint by the pot heads, of the pot heads, for the pot heads.

My favorite sentence: "Prices are starting to come down in the state's licensed pot shops, but due to the glut, growers are — surprisingly — struggling to sell their marijuana."

Not sure why it's surprising if suppliers struggle to sell when there's a glut (even if prices are "starting" to come down). One might wonder it there's cause and effect at play here somehow...

People are buying the cheaper "black market" product. Yeah, never saw that comin', who could?

Speaking from experience, the market is cyclical, and in two or three months the supply of outdoor will dry up or people will tire of 'sun grown' and prices for indoor hydro will go back up. They stabilize in Socal for $2700-$3200 per lb. They could always do what people around here do when the price drops:export. There is sweet money in that but it carries an exponential increase in risk.

BAHAHAHAHA!

People don't want to pay fucking shitty taxes on your weed when they can just buy pot for half that amount on the black market. Not to mention the government is "regulating" the amount of weed so it doesn't "spill" over into other states. Rather than just letting the free market dictate how much weed needs to be grown.

Stupid fucking leftists. lol

Thanks for the laugh Cappy.

I got to see some Hippie infighting in Bisbee, Arizona. It used to be a mining town and now it one of the neat old towns and now it has a bunch of artists. BTW, if you go there, stay a the Copper Queen. There are lots of ghost stories... Anyway. There are two kinds of hippies: the realists hippies (the artists who have to pay for rent and artists supplies) and your old fashioned (everything should be free, man) hippies. There was this nice centrally located piece of property that was located in the old part of town. The owner charged people to park there. And, of course, he was entitled to do it. The old hippies were outraged. "Parking should be free, man." So the old hippies tried to get a petition going to stop the evil property owner from making a buck with his property. These stupid old hippies thought that the first people they could count on was the Realist Hippies. NO dice. Basically, the Realist Hippies kicked out the Old Hippies. "You guys are nothing but a bunch of lazy free loaders." "No, I am not going to sign your petition. I want my customers to park their so that can patronize my shop. Get out of my site you lazy bums." So it was pretty cool watching the Realist Hippies disown that "everything should be free, man" shit.

Oh, and Aaron, I was just kidding about the tie.

I hope they fall into every pitfall on the way. Degenerates deserve all the misery they get.

Seriously, captain, you're jumping the gun on this one, as you tend to do whenever any article gives the slightest indication of supporting your preconceived ideas.

Large shortage one year. The invisible hand of the free market overreacts and there's a large glut the next year. Such cycles are commonplace in many primary commodity markets, such as mining. If such cycles happen despite the best efforts of legions of industry analysts, how about giving the legalized pot industry a little break for not getting it right from the very start, when it had absolutely no historical market data to work with?

Cappy, here's a link that's applicable:

Copyrights are bad, mmmkay, give us money for nothing and we'll produce better stuff.

I honestly couldn't believe they're arguing that artists should just get paid "to produce" for five years!

98 - what gives you the idea that the people involved here are degenerates?

All I see is a market trying to free, with the government rules and regulations making it impossible to be so.

Am I missing something?

I'm wondering, now that it is legal and we aren't going to waste our time prosecuting pot offenses whether the States will bother cracking down on the black markets? Something tells me yes.

It's the government regulations and the excessive taxes. People can buy marijuana at 60-80% cheaper on the black market. The state has really made the process complicated. The "waste" from the marijuana plants (stems, leaves, stalks, roots, etc.) has to rendered in-consumable. Growers can't sell weed directly to the consumer. They have to sell it to a store, who then sells it to a consumer. All the weed has to be sold in fancy, pre-sealed, stamped bags.

All this extra government imposed bullshit, just makes everything more complicated.

It was a lot easier to sell, and buy weed when it was illegal. They grew it, cured it, weighed it and sold it. No taxes, no state inspection, no security cameras.
