It just equals a higher tax bill;

I agree for reasons that are prior to empirical testing. However, that this data is used to prove your point is why social "science" is so stupid. There are so many other third party variables. But having said that, it is a. obviously true that your claim is correct, and b. unethical to spend public money on schools regardless of the veracity of your claim
